Ukrainian troops withdrawal from Avdiivka
Russian air superiority and foggy weather may have forced Ukrainian troops to retreat from Avdiivka earlier than planned. The early and well-executed withdrawal from Avdiivka may turn out to be less of a propaganda victory for president Putin than he had hoped. Avdiivka lost its strategic importance already after it was operationally encircled. Modern air defence systems and fighter aircraft are needed to prevent Russians from using guided bombs.

SensusQ analysis on the Russian Ilyushin-76 military transport aircraft destroyed in Belgorod oblast on January 24, 2024.
It is almost impossible that the crashed plane was the Il-76MD with the tail number RA-78830. It is highly unlikely that there were only 3 escorts on board for 65 PoW. Russia has not released any solid evidence that PoWs were on board the downed aircraft
Top military trends in Russia's war on Ukraine in 2023
Russia has intensified strikes of Iranian-origin Shahed-136/131 munitions, while Ukraine has taken its anti-UAV measures to the next level. Russia has launched significantly fewer effective missile strikes against Ukrainian infrastructure than during the past winter. Russia has greatly increased its use of guided aerial bombs, but with the arrival of F-16 fighter jets, this tactic will be phased out in the near term. Russia’s war in Ukraine has seen the most intensive use of UAVs in military conflicts in history, marking a shift in combat tactics and technology. The role of armoured vehicles on the battlefield has changed and decreased.

Why Russia is not learning from their mistakes
Edgar Schein's Career Anchors Theory suggests that a person's life experiences allow them to form a more accurate and stable "career self-concept." Technical/functional competence is one of the most widely valued career anchors in many countries around the world. A recent study shows that technical/functional competence is not a popular career anchor in Russia.

Yevgeny Prigozhin published an interview in which he accused the Russian Ministry of Defence (MoD) and unnamed oligarchs of deceiving Putin and the Russian public. Prigozhin decided to launch a desperate act in an attempt to get the Russian military leadership replaced with his own loyalists and get one step closer to his ultimate goal and hoped that control of the Russian army would pass to his loyal supporters, Mizintsev and Surovikin, in order to create better conditions for a successful coup.

SensusQ analysis: Head of Wagner Group warns of impending defeat in Ukraine
Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of the Wagner Group, has warned that the mercenary group could soon cease to exist as it runs out of ammunition and fighters, and has suggested that it may withdraw from the fight in Ukraine. Prigozhin’s comments appear to be an attempt to shift responsibility for any failure from himself onto the Russian Ministry of Defence. The US government estimates that 20,000 of the 100,000 Russian military casualties in the past five months in Ukraine have been among Wagner fighters. Despite the group’s heavy losses, Prigozhin has continued to tout Wagner as the best military unit in the world.

Impact of the death toll in Ukraine on the social situation in Russia
There is a lot of uncertainty about the death toll in Ukraine. While the Russian invasion of Ukraine paradoxically increases the wellbeing of Russians, it is unlikely that the increase in the death toll will deter Putin's war aims.
SensusQ analysis on the ZALA Lancet
The ZALA Lancets have conducted several successful precision strikes on various Ukrainian military targets, mostly in October and November last year and seem to be one of the most effective precise munitions in Russia’s arsenal at present. However, due to their limited production, ZALA Lancets will remain rather a propaganda tool than a strategic game changer in Russia's offensive campaign in Ukraine.
The changing landscape of air-defense
The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine demonstrates the strategic shift in air warfare from direct attacks by bombers to standoff attacks using missiles. The ground-based air defenses have yet to embrace this change. Legacy air defenses were designed to defeat the weapon carriers – the bombers, strike fighters, and their highly trained aircrews. Unlike the air raids of WWII, flown by thousands of bombers, modern air forces have much fewer aircraft and even fewer bombers.

The second Russian mobilisation
The predicted Russian second wave of mobilisation likely won’t be announced, while covert mobilisation is already occurring. Russia is likely going to use its conscripts on the Ukrainian front more than it has to date. It is unlikely that Russia would be able to properly equip a further 300,000 mobilised soldiers given the current issues it faces with military production.

Putin's re-shuffle of top generals will most likely hamper Wagner Group's combat capabilities in the future
Gerasimov’s appointment as the theatre commander likely does not affect Russian military performance in Ukraine. The elevation of Gerasimov over Surovikin was rather a political decision to reassert the primacy of the Russian MoD in an internal Russian power struggle. The battle of Soledar is likely to remain the Wagner Group’s most significant military achievement in Ukraine.
The rise of Ramzan Kadyrov and the Kadyrovites
Supported by a personal army knows as Kadyrovites, Ramzan Kadyrov has ruled Chechnya since 2007. The Kadyrovites have been presented as elite warriors, regularly posting videos on social media with the latest equipment. However, they have proved ineffective in the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Conflicts between Kadyrovites, Russian paratroopers and Wagner mercenaries have further underscored the fractures in Russia’s military. In this brief we cover the historical background of the Kadyrovites and the role they play in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
